Leading Through Fire (Published)
Executive Summary: Leading Through Fire (Flow Genome Project)
Program Overview Leading Through Fire is an intensive, six-week graduate-level leadership development program designed to “upgrade the leadership operating system” (Vertical Development) rather than simply acquiring new tactics (Horizontal Development). The curriculum distills essential executive training into embodied practices aimed at fostering resilience, meaning-making, and peak performance in VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) environments.
Core Competencies & Frameworks The course utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach—incorporating neurobiology, psychology, and technology—to enhance synchronous performance and diachronic leadership development. Key frameworks mastered include:
- Vertical Development: Shifting from “Socially Defined” to “Self-Authoring” leadership stages to handle higher orders of complexity.
- Flow State Training: Harnessing peak states to compress the time to mastery, boost productivity by up to 500%, and improve collective intelligence.
- Wicked Problem Solving: Utilizing Polarity Mapping to navigate unsolvable tensions and Immunity to Change protocols to uncover hidden competing commitments that stall organizational progress.
- The Empowerment Dynamic: Transitioning teams from the “Karpman Drama Triangle” (Victim/Rescuer/Persecutor) to an empowerment-based model (Creator/Challenger/Coach).
- Strategic Negotiation: Applying the “Positive No” framework from the Harvard Negotiation Project to set boundaries while preserving vital professional relationships.
Leadership Role: Boat Team Captain (2023) As a Captain, I led a cohort of students through the “Boat Team” structure, serving as a facilitator and “metronome” to ground the group’s neurophysiological state during high-pressure exercises. Responsibilities included:
- Facilitating Complex Exercises: Guiding peers through deep-dive sessions on the Trust Equation, Transactional Analysis, and Immunity to Change workshops.
- Mentorship and Onboarding: Building momentum for students, helping them integrate meta-models into their daily “Power Hour” routines for sustained resilience and peak performance.
- Fostering Collective Coherence: Leading group debriefs to shift mindsets from “Binary Solutions” to “Dialectic Management,” enabling the team to find “Wicked Solutions” to modern executive challenges.

Malcolm Gladwell writes a piece in the New Yorker on Carol Dweck’s mindset research.
Post the line/quote that you feel best represents the thesis of the article.
But what if Enron failed not in spite of its talent mind-set but because of it? What if smart people are overrated?
Post a line/quote that you felt most strongly about, positive or negative, and why?
“In Procter & Gamble’s Navy, Admiral Stark would have stayed. But a cross-divisional management committee would have set the Tenth Fleet in place before the war ever started.” This resonated the most… drove home point efficient organization would behave the opposite, but doesn’t need to. There’s an element of self-correction here.

The Secret to Raising Smart Kids
Carol Dweck shares how growth mindsets can help you raise happier kids, a family (or employees).
“an overemphasis on intellect or talent leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenges and unwilling to remedy their shortcomings.”
see: life-long learning, learned helplessness
“In particular, attributing poor performance to a lack of ability depresses motivation more than does the belief that lack of effort is to blame.”
Will-power. Ask: can this be attributed to effort? Could you have done more? What would have made it easier? What tools would help?

Why Following Your Passion Is Terrible Advice
Thesis:
Passions aren’t “found”… They’re developed.
Resonate:
when you’re told that your interests are somehow ingrained, you give up on new interests as soon as the going gets tough. … knowledge is power.
